Subject: [nuke-info] Activists delay train carrying nuclear waste
from France to Germany The Associated Press 11/11/06 Activists who laid straw dummies on railroad tracks in northern France briefly delayed a train shipment of nuclear waste toward Germany on Saturday, police and anti-nuclear groups said. The train, which left late Friday from the Normandy town of Valognes under an escort of dozens of riot police, was halted at least three times delaying its arrival in Germany by at least 90 minutes. Dozens of anti-nuclear activists hiding in the woods along the tracks in Normandy laid out dummies made of straw, causing the train to lose about two hours on its schedule, said David Lamy of the anti-nuclear group Sortir du Nucleaire. He said police detained five activists. National police spokesman Patrick Hamon said at least two other protests along the route set back the train, delaying its crossing into Germany near Strasbourg, France, until at least 4 p.m. (1500gmt). A police officer in Germany was injured Friday in a clash with demonstrators at a roadblock near a disputed nuclear waste storage site in northern Gorleben, Germany. Anti-nuclear groups regularly stage protests over shipments of nuclear waste to the storage site.ADVERTISER LINKS
