Hi Adam, Yes it looks like you're right, this is a bug. _open is being called for 2D operators but not for geo readers as described in the documentation. I'm going to forward this onto to support to make sure a bug is raised.
As a workaround you could do your initialisation in the first geometry_engine call instead. Cheers, Jon.
