Hi Howard,
Unfortunately there's no way to do this at the moment. The width of the
knob is fixed to the size of its initial entries, and never changes
after that, even if you add new items.
Your "hack" should work in theory (and I can't think of any other way to
do it at the moment), but if you contact support we can add a feature
request for this.

The trouble is the list auto fills from walking a directory, this sets
the width, when I go to another directory with longer names,
these are truncated.
I could fill it with a dummy name to get a certain width but even for
me that seems very hacky
