Well the original question was doing this in a shell only or in the background. 
And "in the background" was screaming using the new "import nuke" functionality 
to
do it without any GUI at all. A simple python shell script importing nuke and 
doing whatever needs to be done.

This does not thread obviously. But it's as background as it gets :)
