Ok. I now see that I shouldn't be passing the write nodes as strings. So the example code is not representative for what's going on.
However, my relay function accepts "*args" and then just passes these args on. So in my mind it should work. But for some reason I get that TypeError. Seems like the nodes are being translated into strings somehow...
