Average Intensities has always worked like a charm for me.

Basically use the curve tool and calculate it for your frame range.

Then, set up a grade node with an expression on gain, something like:

=CurveTool1.intensitydata.r/CurveTool1.intensitydata.r(start_frame)

Where start_frame = whatever frame you want to match to.

I guess I should probably zero out the data on a frame where I want to take
my initial intensity and then simply apply it with a (1+curve) type of
expression.

Not sure if it's ever worked since I only started using Nuke at version 5
and never used the node until now. When you use avg. intensities how are you
using the data?

I tried to use the inverse of the curve and apply it to a gamma knob, but
that didn't seem to work. Also the ROI on the curvetool seems to be broken.
I'll set it and then it defaults back to full frame whenever I execute it.
