I do remember seeing a script for resetting the viewer somewhere, just don't
remember where. I think it was this list, maybe check the archives. I'm
pretty sure they mapped it to alt-R.

In the same completely unhelpful vein, I do believe there is a "close all of
them" modifier key combination used when closing properties panels. I
remember using it on OSX, but I can't seem to find it on Linux. Possibly
platform-dependent?

It's not magic, but somewhere along the way, I started using 0 for the root
of my comp, 9 for the previous version and 7 for reference. Then 1, 2, and 3
are for whatever I'm poking at at the moment. Maybe a similar technique
could help you.
