after a few more hours of troubleshooting - the main problem was, in fact, that there was an offset to which everything else was parented in Maya. once all the transformations were frozen things started falling into place. Ultimately, I can't decide if the abstraction of the parent transfrom from the individual objects is a good feature or design flaw....I can easily imagine situations where i would be cursing readGeo for the opposite reason. thanks for the help guys
