You can use nuke.tcl() within python to execute a tcl command.

So, in your case, something like this should work:

  n = nuke.selectedNode()

topnode_name = nuke.tcl("full_name [topnode %s]" % n.name())

topnode = nuke.toNode(topnode_name)
