ok, start by creating your gizmo with a user knob called versionNumber
(or whatever you like to call it). Make it an integer knob.
Then, in all the Write nodes' file knob inside your gizmo use the
following where you'd normally place the version number:
[format %02d [value parent.versionNumber]]
e.g.:
/path/to/output/name_[format %02d [value parent.versionNumber]].%04d.exr
Render that and let me know if it works, then can throw you an example
for the version up mechanism (sorry, just pretty busy so feeding you
piece meal ;).
