Annoying when it pops up over the middle of the shot, isn't it :)

If you're on Linux, you can have KDE remember the position of that window:
 o Start tracking something long and move the progress window where you want it
 o Right-click the titlebar of the progress window, then
Advanced/Special Window Settings
 o On the Geometry tab tick the boxes next to Position and Size and
change their dropdowns to Remember

It should now stay where it's put.

I expect one can do something similar in GNOME but I'm not sure about
Windows or OS X...
