I think he meant :S as in 'confused face'.

When you say rendered in 'layers' do you mean separate exr sequences per pass? How were you expecting Nuke to bring them in? Each pass in a separate channel? You either need to render into a single EXR from Maya or bring in the passes individually and shuffle to the correct layer set or create a script to do this automatically for you.
