Essentially you are talking about doing a contrast adjustment on a specific stretch of the hue channel? Easier in Nuke than in Photoshop, but never easy. One of the reasons I got interested in this project was because of the fun I had playing around with color spaces exactly as you and Adrian have suggested. I love how some things that are unavailable (or obscured) in some spaces, come as their own channels in other spaces. I have tried all manner of channel opp voodoo but have found nothing that does the job as simply as our tool. However... It is by no means perfect, less than an alpha product at the moment.
