Public channels (mailing list, GitHub) are our preferred communication mechanism; this and a new numpy-t...@googlegroups.com are additions for private communications to lower the bar to start contributing. It turns out not everyone is comfortable with their first question or code being seen by 1000+ people. tl;dr the usual worries you post below aren't very relevant in this case, and anything but Slack is pretty much a non-starter.
