A lot of projects will have issues tagged as something like "Good first issue". Numpy doesn't do that, but they do tag their documentation issues as such: https://github.com/numpy/numpy/issues?q=is%3Aissue%20state%3Aopen%20label%3A%2204%20-%20Documentation%22
