I think Chetan is on to an important point which is that
goal-oriented/goal-seeking is a means of providing internal supervision for
learning. Not only that, but goals effectively serve as filters for
retaining important patterns, since patterns serving to achieve goals will
be exercised more often. I've been working on incorporating goal-seeking
into a neural network for a number of years, and was excited to come across
the work being done with NuPIC that takes what I think is a related
