Not really the same thing but something analogous is when students get
rejected by the project mentors. Here in KDE, we have something called the
"Season of KDE" ( which makes more sense in both hemispheres even ;) ) for
students who are rejected. We offer them to work on their proposals anyway
w/o the Google money. For a t-shirt, a certificate, for fun, for the love
of the idea and for solving a problem. And trust me it works.

A KDE colleague and me had started SoK back in 2006, since then it has
become a yearly ritual and has been totally perfected by our community
members. I am pretty sure if we dig in our KDE data we will find that we
have retained more SoKkers than SoCcers i.e. KDE SoK folks join for the
love of the idea and stick around for longer time.

I would highly recommend that NuPIC does something like this if possible.
