Hello NuPIC, I thought you might be interested in hearing about my trip to OSCON[1] this year, so here it is.
Overall, there was a big focus this year on "full-stack development" at OSCON, especially in the importance of understanding how all the components in applications work together. "Back end" developers were encouraged to get more into the "front-end" of their applications, and vice versa. There was also a lot of cultural content. OSCON has always been a rather progressive environment, so there was a lot of talk about changing the terms that software engineers use in general conversation to be more inclusive of minorities, people with disabilities, and females. There were a lot of women at OSCON again this year, which is very encouraging. Although the percentage of men with elaborate facial also seems to be increasing each year, but I'm not sure that has any correlation. ;) I found there was a lot of great presentations for me about open source community management, and I came away with several pages of notes about how I might improve the NuPIC community. You'll probably see some correspondence from me soon trying to get more community engagement with NuPIC. I was also introduced to a few more tools we might use for tutorials, demonstrations, and contributions. I met with a lot of people for lunch and dinner discussions about NuPIC, including: - Neal Ford, Thoughworks - Matthew McCollough, GitHub - Pete Hunt, Facebook (Instagram) - Mike Titus (and friends), AVA.ai - Kurt Anderson, LinkedIn - James Moore, PSU & EEG Kaggle Team - Matt Stine, Pivotal - Nate Schutta, OSCON speaker - Howard Ship, creator of Apache Tapestry A couple people told me they were surprised that Numenta didn't have another presentation about NuPIC to give at OSCON this year, so I'm going to make it a point to submit a presentation with NuPIC demos for next year. Some said that NuPIC was a very new and different technology than most of the OSCON presentations, and that we should definitely be represented.
