Hello NuPIC,

Based on some discussions we've been having on the nupic-theory
mailing list and privately between Fergal, David Ray, Subutai, and
myself, the idea came up to create a community repository with the
same intention of Numenta's nupic.research repo [1]. Namely, this
would be a place for NuPIC hackers to implement new ideas for HTM
algorithm changes that extend or override existing objects or
functions within NuPIC, much in the same fashion that Numenta
researchers are doing in nupic.research.

But while nupic.research is a read-only repository, the
community.research repo would be open for anyone interested in trying
out new extensions to the HTM algorithms. This could foster some
interesting innovations, and will make it much easier to experiment
with your ideas than going through the normal contribution process
through NuPIC. The hurdle for algorithm changes is high, but once you
have proven your idea, you will have a much better footing for making
algorithm changes in a pull request to NuPIC and getting them
approved.

This is the same process that Numenta uses internally with
nupic.research, and we think this might work out really well for those
of you starting to experiment with algorithm changes, whether you are
a contributor to NuPIC or not. We would love to see more
community-driven extensions to the algorithms.
