Answer from Stuart Gathman on the linux-lvm list: For a root (or other) file system on LVM no special /etc/init.d/halt modification is needed. The volume is remounted read-only in the existing /etc/init.d/halt script and the LVM metadata is apparently not volatile, unless by pure bad luck you happened to be rearranging the logical volumes when the power failed.
