Well, I tried re-connecting the old USB-to-serial adapter (I had one
open USB port on the new server), and that has solved the rest of my
problems.  I have a long cat-5 run between the UPS and the server (that
cable hasn't changed, as the new server is in the same location as the
old server), and I'm guessing that either the input sensitivity or the
output driver on the PCI-E card is not as good as the USB adapter, and
characters were getting dropped in one direction or the other.

I do still need the patch I sent you, as bcmxcp was broke without that.
