Well, if the NUT Monitor gui is opened I get a message almost immediately.  
Both a 'pop-up' in the upperright corner of the desktop (LXDE) and a 'message 
notification' in the system tray.   But never a message in the LXterminal.

Are you sure this is not a coincidence? Sometimes there is a delay from when 
you pull the plug, and when the power failure propagates through the NUT 
toolchain.

You should see a startup message from upsmon in /var/log/syslog.
