iirc, there was no detach_device() primitive outside of linux.
In older versions of Mac OS X (either 10.3 or 10.4) you could ignore
the return code when claiming the device, and the two processes would
simply interleave their requests to the device. I'm not sure if this
still works in 10.5. Communicating with ioupsd, or disabling it, would
probably be a better solution.
