We've never found the USB interface entirely reliable, but serial and the 
SNMP cards have both worked well for us.

A couple of caveats...

If you're using a serial cable, make sure it's wired correctly.  It's not a 
standard straight-through RS232 pinout.

Before you buy your new battery pack, check that you can get the old one 
out first.  They're inclined to swell as they age!
