You may have found this already, but this (plus the followup KB item #1021345) seems to imply that you can bind the USB-to-serial adapter to the NUT VM: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1022290 You should be able to do "USB 2.0/1.1 Host-Connected" with that cable. In fact, if the host supports USB 3.0, it may help to move the converter to a non-3.0 port.
