It is as fast as hardcoded code only on startup it is a bit slower, but in case you fetch 500.000 urls you will not measure a different.
Please browse the mailing list archive the plugin discussion (why, how and so) was done in November December last year. You will found very long discussion trees.
There you will found some performance measurements as well.
