Originally I was one of the main objecters to this plug-in mechanism. I
don't have any time to offer any other code, so I would tend towards
Stefan's mechanism (which has the large advantage of actually existing)
rather than any other mechanism.

(I'd still vote for getting rid of dom4j and log4j for the same reasons as
Doug has suggested: reducing dependancies is always a good thing)
