People (users) don't know there latitude and longitude only there zip code.

Thats true. But I blief if you want to do area searches it is much better to have some coordinates.
So if the user enters a zip code it is useful to translate the zip code to a latitude and longitude. It is more simple to search stuff next to a place if you have coordinates within your index then having zips in the index.
Also coordinates are more precise then zips.
And what about searches if you life next to a border. Each country has their own zip system.
