not at all convinced about that, if you check out the latest "stable"
code from cpan.org

it's using the perl "pack/unpack" commands, which thus far, nobody
appears to have figured out a way to make read the particular binary
number syntax that lucene is using.

or something like that :)

you can however grab an older version, which is slower, but should be
backwards compatible
