nutch does not run with Tomcat 5, you got to install 4.X.
Quite contrary, it does run with Tomcat 5, but perhaps it doesn't run properly with JDK 1.5 ... I'm running Nutch just fine on Tomcat 5.0.28 / j2sdk1.4.2_05 on Windows, as well as on Linux and FreeBSD.
