Hi Jo, Nutch is about to become an Apache Incubator Project. This means that is recognized enough for Apache's standards, but also means a lot of work to be done for Apache compliance. Let alone any software improvements.
As for the status quo, Nutch works and has found some very nice uses. Especially Germans seem to like Nutch. Have a look at http://sumalab.de/ (P2P-Search engine to avoid censorship) or http://www.umkreisfinder.de/ (Geo-searching). But do not forget, that those guys put a lot of work into source code enhancements and administration.
