You make it sound like you "only" copied the crawldb directory but I'm assuming 
you meant your whole crawl directory, including segment, linkdb, and indexes?
 
Tomcat doesn't really need root access to any webapp (or its working files), 
and sometimes it actually wont work with root if your running it as "www", as 
you really should.
 
If you could paste the complete log from Tomcat when you initiate your first 
search that might help, also post your "crawl" directory structure by running 
"du -h crawl/".

tomcat in linux - it returns 0 hits.
But in windows its getting results from search screen. Any idea?? I have
given root permissions to the crawled db.
In the logs it is showing - oening segments.... But hits 0!!!
