I recommend 'kill -QUIT' as a poor-man's profiler. With a few stack dumps you can usually get a decent idea of where the time is going. If you want to get fancy you can 'kill -QUIT' every minute or so, then use 'sort | uniq -c | sort -nv' so see where you're spending a lot of time.
