it looks like that was a red herring. when I modified the conf/hadoop-site.xml and lowered themapred.map.tasks and mapred.reduce.tasks both to 1 (I had them set at 2, which was what the wiki tutorial had)
it seemed to get past this, and started fetching things. regards Ian
