Hi all,
The Nutch community unanimously voted to mark the 0.7.x development
branch of Nutch as having an End Of Life status.
All the code related to this branch will of course remain available
through our Subversion repository. What this notice means is that the
Nutch project will make no coordinated effort to maintain this branch,
or fix outstanding issues, or make any new official releases from this
branch.
All JIRA issues related to 0.7.x (or earlier) branches will be closed
with a status "Won't Fix" - unless the issue they describe is still
relevant to the current code base (if you are sure that's the case
please mark the issue as relevant to releases > 0.8).
The motivation for this decision is to keep our attention on the current
platform instead of being distracted by old code that is now of limited
use, and to focus our resources where they are most needed.
This closes an important chapter in Nutch history - the 0.7.x branch is
the pinnacle of the original design, initially created by Doug Cutting
and Mike Cafarella. It has served well its purpose, and even today there
are a few installations I know of that use it actively on a limited scale.
Many lessons learned during 0.7.x times have been applied to the current
Nutch code base, and influenced also the design of Hadoop. I'd like to
thank all those who contributed to Nutch during that time - thanks to
your work Nutch started to get the recognition and attention as a viable
Open Source search engine platform.
