Top of my head thought is yes it should be the same as java determines
the byte ordering regardless of platform.

I have not tried it, but it should all be the same. Since you are talking
about merging multiple segments into a new segment and creating a single index
out of that, you should be able to try this without damaging your original
segments even if reading from them fails.
