Nutch is designed to be used with Hadoop.  The local modes are more for 
development and debugging.  While you *technically* might be able to 
have local nutch installs running on multiple machines, I wouldn't 
recommend it as you would have to have scripts to coordinate actions 
between those machines.  Use Hadoop, that is what it was designed for is 
large scaling of storage and processing.
