OK, I see your queasiness. You are intepreting "physical network"
strictly, ala Tanenbaum and the original layering definitions. I've used
"physical network" more loosely, to encompass a combination of data
link and physical layers. My Bad.

I agree.  Removing "in-band" seems like a fine way to go here.
