That jittering is most likely something else restarting. Can you please try running something like execsnoop (attached) - it's a dtrace script that shows you if something is quickly restarting.
A recent one that I saw was the ospm daemon, but a reboot seemed to stop it happening - I've no idea why it happened though, but it looked like some service was restarting causing it to crash/restart.
