Now that the GUI has settled down for Phase 1, a couple of things stand out
about the Network Preferences dialog that weren't too important to fix this
time around, but would be nice to fix in some future update:
a) The Show dropdown at the top is a bit clunky compared to a simple row of
tabs. It made sense for earlier iterations of the design, but tabs would
probably work better, now.
b) The Wireless tab shouldn't be a sub-tab of the Connection Properties view.
It landed there early-on in the design process when I (wrongly) assumed that
the favorites list and related settings would apply per-wireless-NIC, but they
don't.
So, current thought would be to replace the Show dropdown with a row of four
tabs labelled something like Status, Profiles, Connection Properties and
Wireless, with the Wireless tab being 'promoted' out of the current Connection
Properties view. As in the current design, the Wireless tab would only appear
if one or more wireless NICs were present (whether enabled or not).
The Connection Properties tab would contain what is currently in the IP Address
sub-tab of the Connection Properties view. We'd also need to add a new
dropdown list to this tab, to allow you to view/edit each connection in each
profile. This function is currently performed by the lower part of the Show
dropdown list, which would be going away.
(It may also make sense to split IPv4 and IPv6 properties into separate
sub-tabs of the new Connection Properties tab, as together they make for one
fairly complicated tab.)
