I was kind of hoping that was not going to be the answer that came back,
because the only firm calls I've had since Christmas have been agencies, and
I've had a policy of not working with them unless I really, really, really have
to. When negotiating the contract you have both arms tied behind your back and
have to play a game of chinese whispers with somebody who doesn't understand
the client's actual specific needs, or the candidate's actual specific
experience or capability: it becomes a shoot-out on price. Searching computer
futures, there seem to be only a handful of contract jobs, most of them abroad,
so perhaps that market isn't quite so vibrant either.

I'll leave it until before I head out to Canada on a job for a couple of weeks
(which obviously puts a stop to "immediate start" jobs), but it might be that's
my Summer all horrible and nasty then. :-(

Not helped of course by the fact day rates have collapsed in the last year
because there now seem to be *many* more people claiming to be Rails experts
compared to last year. It's starting to feel a bit like the PHP market - lots
of people who can do "stuff", but not that many like those of us who have been
sipping the BDD kool-aid for a couple of years and who are overlooked or
undervalued in terms of day rate. I was really hoping Rails would never get
like the PHP market. C'est la vie. Time to go and find another niche I think...

If anybody else thinks there's more light down the end of the tunnel, please do
speak up - I'd hate to have to go and get a proper job. :-)
