Hi all Kanban is a development methodology based around the idea of visualising development tasks (e.g. as physical cards / Post-Its) and limiting the number being worked on at any time. "Stop starting, start finishing" is one of the mantras. Teams that do Kanban well cut down on wasteful multitasking of overworked staff and catch more defects early rather than when they've already escaped to a live environment.
Kanban is not hard to try in a team, but it takes a few weeks before you start to feel the rhythm. The getKanban board game[1] you play through a few weeks in the life of a software development team using Kanban, this way you get a feel for how it works much more quickly. Also the game simulates realistic situations (e.g. urgent customer requests, politics over staffing) so you can see how they are revealed by a kanban system and how it helps teams make more informed decisions about the best solution. In November I'll be running two getKanban sessions in Manchester with Royd Brashay[2]. These are: * Wednesday 14th (evening) - Quick Play version which will take a couple of hours * Saturday 24th (morning) - Advanced Play version which will take us up to lunch Note: Neither version (not even the Advanced Play) require any background knowledge or experience, they just vary in the length and detail (e.g. events that occur) of the game. You're welcome to come to both, or to come to the Quick Play version and decide if you want to come to the Advanced Play and bring friends/colleagues along. Both events will be at the MadLab in Manchester. A more detailed description can be found on the MadLab site here: * http://madlab.org.uk/content/getkanban-nov2012-quick/ * http://madlab.org.uk/content/getkanban-nov2012-advanced/ Neither session is being run for a profit, however the Saturday event tickets cost £10 as a donation to the MadLab. (They're very generous to local groups with the space, and we feel this is a fair contribution to their costs.) Hope to see you there. If you have any questions, please email me!
