Was going to write a reply but Will said it very well (we have talked over
this a lot at NWRUG)

I would +1 meetups. Nearly all the jobs I have ever got have come from
meetups or conferences.

I don't have a very strong Github profile, however I have a portfolio of
clients and projects to show. If you are just starting out then it's catch
22 so how else would you get experience to for an entry level position?
Persuade someone to take a chance or open source/Github profiles.

If employers choose to filter using Github then that is their prerogative
but they will be missing out on a huge amount of talented developers.
However I would imagine that if I were to have invested time in building
open source contributions and a good Github profile I could charge more
money, get better work etc..
