This is something I've searched the net/NGs for, but the general consensus
is 'no'. I saw one post in the Netstumbler forums saying it was possible,
but no instructions on how. However it seems that you *can*, with a bit of
effort, update the firmware on a rebranded card with an Orinoco updater (by
hacking the updater), but you cannot turn a rebranded card into an Orinoco
card.

I can dig out the info about modifying the Orinoco firmware updater if you
like. Actually just done, quick Google Groups search:

selm=228b7902.0203071512.75c27524%40posting.google.com>
Driver versions you can use are linked to firmware I believe - with more
recent firmware you shouldn't have any driver problems any more.
Alternatively, have you tried updating the card's firmware while it is in
the access point (i.e. reload the kernel for an access point)?

I agree this is a real pain. I suppose you have checked the IBM site for
updates?

Anyway, good luck. Let us know how you get on.

Subject: [nycwireless] Reflashing Private Label Orinocos? WAS: Orinoco
Windohs Trouble

Just bought a clearance IBM card that is a rebranded Lucent/Orinoco
Silver... and it sucks:

* The software is old Lucent software. You can't use Lucent client
software with this card due to how it identifies itself (in Windows)

* The driver is similarly old. Can't use the Lucent driver without mega
hassles.

The card, however, works great in my AP-1000 - just plug it in, and off
it goes. Which makes sense, since it is the same device as a Lucent
Silver.

Does anyone know of a way to reflash these private label cards, either in
Windows or Linux, so that they "become" normal Orinocos? I read about the
Airport hack, but don't have access to one :(

Thanks.

jonathan
