I came across an article (4 months old now) comparing various models and
brands of AP, not NICs. If you might be interested, email me off list.
The article did get into parameters like speed/distance etc.

If you plan to use sniffer app on your iPaq, the only one available to my
best knowledge is mini-netstumbler. It however requires an Orinoco card.

I have Symbol 4121 and Orinoco gold. Personally I like Symbol card better
(interface and performance) but you need Orinoco for
mini-netstumbler. Nonetheless, both Symbol and Orinoco work great on iPaq
and laptop.
