You can connect it directly, yes.  A hub is a multiport repeater, a switch
is a multiport bridge, so technically you can't "bridge" using a hub...

10/100 switches are dime-a-dozen nowdays.  Given the limitation on class
II repeaters on a 100baseTX network, I would strongly suggest you just
cascade more switches if you need additional ports.

As long as it's running IP, then whatever application can just use the
router directly.  But it's strictly dependent on _what_ you want to run.
