You can make an omnidirecetional antenna for 5.8Ghz, or any other
directional antenna you could make for 2.4Ghz, it's just going to be a
little less than half as big. The directionality is more like the
difference between AM and FM, where AM will usually reach into a short
tunnel or over a hill, while FM needs almost line of sight. But if you
ever did a double slit experiment in physics you've seen even visible
light at nanometer wavelengths isn't completely line-of-sight. Both
5.8Ghz and 2.4Ghz are at millimeter wavelengths, 2.4Ghz will have about
twice the corner cutting abilities of 5.8Ghz, but the 802.11 power
levels are too low with respect to the receiver sensitivity to matter
much.

If you want to make a homemade antenna any of the web pages with
formulas should do, http://wireless.gumph.org/ is already scaled down
from a 440Mhz antenna. The only thing to really worry about is the
impedence being wrong. But I've never heard of anyone burning out
a 802.11b or 802.11a card with the wrong impedance antenna so the real
fear is that it will decrease your ERP (i.e. lower the dBi of the
antenna). You will want to be even more careful with your spacing too.
