I have searched and I can't find the info I am looking for.

I'm looking for basic information about how ad-hoc networks work;
how devices discover each other (driver level?), how they communicate with
each other, what the standards (is ad-hoc part of 802.11b?) are, and what
protocols are used. I'm also curious as to how applications can be
written to take advantage of ad-hoc networking.

I know two (or more) laptops can talk to each other via ad-hoc, is that
part of the wifi standard? Is there any difference in say a wireless iPaq
and a wireless Laptop in terms of ad-hoc functionality?

Any info or useful URLs would be great, thanks ... [I have searched google
and read what I can but I still am unable to answer some of the base
questions I have listed above].
