The WAP 11 is actually a pretty good AP, but the internal airport cards are pretty horrible. You should try changing the channel to 1 or 11, most AP's come from the factory on channel 6 so that's the worst channel to be on if you have any neighboors with WiFi. Make sure the antennas are pointing straight up or straight down so that your laptop sits inside the area of greatest signal strength. For picking up nodes around the city it is best to use either a ORiNOCO or a Cisco card. The ORiNOCO is a better value at about $60, and 95% as effictive as the Cisco card.
I've read that the radios in the Airport cards isn't so bad it's just the iBook/TiBook antennas, which means you might be able to frankenstein on a better external antenna. But the two PCMCIA cards I mentioned come with built in antenna dongles, bits that stick out of the port. They are pretty sturdy, I only know one person that broke one when he dropped his laptop. -- Daniel <<You cant eat before a operashun.
