            The hearing went well (even though it was a bit long at 4.5
hours). Terry suggested that providing wireless to underserved communities
(bridging the digital divide) would be more cost effective than wiring those
areas. I think the major issue that was brought up by the committee and all
the individuals presenting was the ineffectiveness of the local internet
carriers to deploy inexpensive (as compared to other countries) broadband
services to small businesses. Another major issue that was raised was the
inadequate upstream bandwidth on inexpensive (<$100) "high speed" internet
solutions by the broadband carriers. <comment> The current providers seem to
"tell" customers what they want, in terms of high download speeds, but low
upload speeds, something which is not very accurate when users attempt to
send files or use video conferencing. I guess the broadband providers did
not design or want their connections for more than just downloading pretty
graphics. </comment> Hopefully government can play a role in changing this.
